The only day when Hungarian government spends the max budget once a year on fireworks is 20th of August.
It is the day when at the whole Danube is lit with lights and fireworks for half hour.
Budapest definitely offers great attractions all around the years.
But,in terms of fireworks, you will not see much on new year, aside from people chanting and making small scale fireworks.
This has been the practice before the Covid, and seems to continue even after the covid.

A must place to be at the new year night in Budapest to watch fireworks is the Vorosmarty Square (Vorosmarty ter).
The adjacent streets of Vaci Utca,Deak Ference Utca and Becsi Utca are overcrowded and there is hardly any place to walk at the new year night.
Budapest New year fireworks around the City
Even without the big fireworks arrangement, Budapest still offers many attractions at new year which can multiply your joy.
If you can attend areas closer to Szent István Square or Nyugati, you will be amazed with the celebrations by the locals for the new year night.
This place is full of people dancing,singing,drinking and celebrating with each other.
Sometimes there are concerts arranged at one of the bridges but its not a common practice.
Music is definitely played in loud speaks at the Vorosmarty square.
Budapest fireworks shops at New year
If you reach Budapest few days earlier than the new year, you can buy fireworks from TESCO,ALDI,LIDL or SPAR.
However, if you reach one day before the new year night and want to buy fireworks or widgets for new year celebrations, you can buy these from the kiosks closer to Deak Ferenc Ter.
As all the shops are closed, if you are looking for food and drinks, these are also available in the kiosks closer to Deak ferenc ter.
However, its a good idea to buy these before normal shops close.
